Which Operators Use Which Hardware

See which ATM models each operator deploys and their average hardware score.

How We Rate Hardware

Independent editorial ratings based on published specifications, field testing reports, and operator feedback.

Build Quality 25%

Durability, materials, bill acceptor quality, and bill capacity. Casino-grade MEI acceptors and 2,000+ bill capacity score highest.

Security 20%

Physical theft resistance, vault rating, lock quality, and tamper detection. UL291 certification (crowbar resistance) earns a 5/5.

Two-Way 20%

Buy and sell capability, cash dispensing, and recycler technology. One-way-only machines score 1/5 here by design.

Upgradability 15%

Modular design, ability to add cash dispensers, expandable note storage, and future-proofing.

Aesthetic 10%

Visual design, retail-friendliness, screen quality, and modern appearance. Matters for host locations and customer trust.

Serviceability 10%

Field-serviceable design, replacement parts availability, and manufacturer support network. Defunct manufacturers score low.

Score Formula

Score = (Build × 0.25) + (Security × 0.20) + (Two-Way × 0.20) + (Upgradability × 0.15) + (Aesthetic × 0.10) + (Serviceability × 0.10)

Per-operator scores are the simple average of all models that operator deploys. Displayed as half-star increments (1.0 to 5.0).

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best Bitcoin ATM hardware?

The Genmega Gemini is our highest-rated Bitcoin ATM hardware (5.0/5.0). It is the only model with UL291 certification, meaning it resists crowbar attacks for 15+ minutes. It features two-way capability, a 21.5" screen, 2,000-bill capacity, and accessibility features from Genmega's traditional ATM manufacturing background.

What is the difference between one-way and two-way Bitcoin ATMs?

One-way Bitcoin ATMs only accept cash to buy cryptocurrency. Two-way Bitcoin ATMs support both buying and selling, allowing customers to also withdraw cash. Two-way machines are preferred by hosts (more revenue) and customers (more utility).

How are Bitcoin ATM hardware ratings calculated?

Ratings use 6 weighted dimensions: Build Quality (25%), Security (20%), Two-Way (20%), Upgradability (15%), Aesthetic (10%), and Serviceability (10%). Each is scored 1-5 based on editorial research. The weighted average produces an overall 1.0 to 5.0 score.

Why do one-way machines score lower?

One-way machines automatically receive 1/5 on the Two-Way dimension (20% of total score), which caps their maximum possible score at 4.0. This is intentional: hosts and customers strongly prefer machines that support both buying and selling.

What does UL291 certification mean?

UL291 is a security certification requiring ATM safes to resist physical attack (crowbar, drill) for at least 15 minutes. Standard for traditional bank ATMs, it is rare in the Bitcoin ATM industry. Currently the Genmega Gemini is the only certified model.

How often are hardware ratings updated?

Ratings are reviewed monthly and updated when new models launch or existing models receive significant updates. Each model shows its "last reviewed" date. The scoring algorithm and dimension weights are documented on our methodology page.
